Fields, a fifth-year defensive tackle out of Mississippi State, signed a two-year, $5 million contract to play for the Denver Broncos, who are retooling their defense with several free agent signings.
Fields spent his first four NFL seasons in San Francisco and followed new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan from California. Nolan was head coach of the 49ers from 2005 until his firing midway through last season.
Fields is the sixth projected starter signed in free agency by the Broncos, who also have signed defensive backs Brian Dawkins, Renaldo Hill and Andre’ Goodman and linebackers Andra Davis and Darrell Reid.
